Ms. Carolyn Rodrigues Birkett (Guyana) started her career in 1989 as a school teacher. From 1995 to 2001 she was responsible for coordinating an Indigenous Peoples Programme funded by the Inter-American Development Bank. She then served her Government as Minister of Amerindian Affairs (Indigenous Peoples) from 2001 to 2008 and as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and International Cooperation from 2008 to May 2015. Concurrently, Ms. Rodrigues Birkett served as a Member of Parliament from 2001-2015, having been elected on three occasions.
In September 2015, Ms. Birkett joined FAO as Coordinator, Parliamentary Alliances in the Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity Development Division (OPC). She was appointed Director of the FAO Liaison Office with the United Nations at Geneva in August 2017, where she is currently serving.
